Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 12/2024

The number of Social Security contributors in Catalonia increased by 71,830 people, a figure that represents an increase of 2.0% in December compared to the previous year, to stand at 3,589,135 people according to provisional data. The number of contributors increased in 38 counties and Aran, led by L’Alt Empordà, El Baix Penedès and El Gironès (2.7% in all three) together with La Selva (2.6%). By contrast, the number of contributors fell in El Lluçanès (−1.5%), L’Alta Ribagorça (−0.8%), La Terra Alta (−0.6%) and El Priorat (−0.4%).

In relation to November, the number of contributors fell in Catalonia as a whole by 34.990 people, or 1.0%. The number of contributors increased in three counties and Aran and declined in 39.

By sex and compared to a year ago, the number of women Social Security contributors increased in Catalonia as a whole by 2.1% and the number of men by 2.0%.

In Catalonia as a whole, all age groups increased their number of contributors with respect to a year ago, except for the 30 to 44 age group which decreased by 0.1%. Contributors aged 55 and over increased the most in Catalonia as a whole (4.3%) followed by those aged under 30 (4.1%).

In December 2024, La Segarra was the county with the highest proportion of foreign national contributors at 33.1% followed by El Barcelonès (25.5%). In contrast, El Lluçanès and L’Anoia were the counties with the lowest proportion of foreign contributors (7.9% and 9.0%, respectively). Compared to the same month of the previous year, foreign national contributors increased in Catalonia as a whole (6.9%) and did so in all counties and Aran. Spanish national contributors rose by 1.0% and decreased in seven counties and Aran.

Affiliations in the services sector, which account for 79.3% of the total, were up by 2.5% year-over-year, the highest increase of all sectors, and grew throughout the territory except in two counties and Aran. Affiliations in industry rose by 0.9% in Catalonia as a whole and also grew in 30 counties. The increase in construction was 2.0% and it grew in 27 counties and Aran. Agriculture is the only sector where affiliations decreased, by 2.0%, which represents 1,070 fewer affiliations than a year ago.

By type of working day, 19.7% of employee affiliations in December 2024 were part-time, a similar proportion to the one in December 2023 (19.8%). In the case of women, the proportion was 26.5%, more than double the figure for men (13.0%).

In terms of temporary contracts, the proportion of Social Security affiliations for temporary employees stood at 10.2%, 1.4 percentage points less than a year ago. The county with the highest level of temporary employment was La Ribera d’Ebre (14.9%) while El Baix Empordà had the lowest level (8.0%).

In 2024, there were 30 counties which recorded their annual highest number of Social Security contributors in summer (mostly in the months of June and July), 10 counties had the highest number of members in autumn (all of them in November) and 2 counties in spring (one in March and one in May). The only territory that recorded maximums in the winter is Aran, specifically in the month of December. On the other hand, all but seven counties had the lowest number of contributors in January.
